Perique

Good morning from Newmarket. It is off to Surrey today for the 1.50 at Lingfield, a mile and a half maiden auction for three-year-olds.

Our runner is Perique, who has been very slow to mature and come to hand. He has been ready to race for a few weeks, but I was anxious to find him as realistic a starting point as possible, so as not to disappoint a late-developing type that is going to need time and distance. The terms of this race fitted in well, although Andrew Balding’s Paradise Boy sets a very good standard and we are having to give weight to all our rivals.

What I am hoping is that Perique will learn a thing or two about the game this afternoon and we can use this run as a platform to build on down the line. He is out of a winning Sadler’s Wells mare, and his siblings include the Grp-3 placed Moderah and last season’s King Edward VII fourth Raa Atoll. It is a good middle distance pedigree, so hopefully Perique can demonstrate today that we have something to work with. The overall standard of this contest is not too exacting, so we must hope that we will see some promise. Luke Morris takes the mount.

All the best,
Ed.
