Toro Dorado

Good morning. First of all I would like to extend my congratulations to Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team after their historic triumph in the Melbourne Cup today with Cross Counter. It truly was a wonderful achievement by all concerned.

We are busy today with three runners, commencing with Global Acclamation in the 12.05 at Wolverhampton. He is probably a nursery or three-year-old handicap prospect in time, but there have been glimpses of early speed in both his runs to date. He drops to five furlongs this afternoon, which hopefully won’t inconvenience him too much, and he should be running on at the finish. There looks to be a couple in there that might set a form standard that is a little beyond him, but I look forward to a good run. Martin Harley rides.

Our attentions then turn to Kempton this evening, with Shawaaheq getting the ball rolling in the mile novice for two-year-olds at 6.00. I see we are chalked up as 50/1 shots at the time of writing, and it is fair to comment that this horse has been slow to come to hand, for all that he is not over big. The positives are that the dam won as a two-year-old for us, whilst his year older sibling Qawamees was runner-up on two-year-old debut last year. It is probably expecting too much for him to emulate that, but I am quietly optimistic that we will see some promise.

Our third and final runner today is Toro Dorado, who goes in the mile nursery at 6.30, also at Kempton. This lad is another slow developer, though he has been learning on the track unlike Shawaaheq. His initial handicap mark of 64 looked fair enough, but he cocked his jaw on nursery debut last time out and we never really saw what he was capable of. He has been nudged down a couple of pounds again, so we have just snuck into a 0-60 contest today. This is probably his sort of level, and we have added a pair of blinkers to see if it will encourage him to race in a more straightforward fashion. We are drawn to attack in stall two, and I hope that we will see some real encouragement under a more positive ride this evening. David Probert does the steering on both of our Kempton runners this evening.

All the best,
Ed.
