A Day in the Life of Work Rider Steve Nicholson

Fri 17 April 2020

Rarely do you come across a man who is totally and utterly dedicated to his job, with his love of horses so evident. Well most of you haven’t met Steve Nicholson then!

Steve has worked with horses almost all his life and has been with Ed since he started back at Gainsborough Stables all those years ago. Before then he worked for the late Alex Scott and was one of his top work riders looking after and riding the likes of Cadeaux Genereux, a multiple Group One winning sprinter and successful sire.

Steve joined Ed after Alex’s tragic passing and has been instrumental in some of his great successes. He has ridden and looked after the likes of classic winner Lailani and Hong Kong Vase winner and globetrotting superstar Red Cadeaux.

His day to day job is like that of any work rider and he starts bright and early. He will ride 3 to 4 lots every day and looks after his horses at evening stables. He also helps in the teaching and guidance of our younger members of staff and aids the Head Lad and Assistant in organising the team with their relevant tasks. With his extensive knowledge of bloodstock and form he also runs the sales when they are on for us.

Steve is an absolute pleasure to have around and is one of the key cogs in our team, which has helped us be successful over the years.
