18-06-2009 Royal Ascot glory as Fareer wins Britannia thriller
FAREER gave trainer Ed Dunlop a thrilling Royal Ascot success as he came with a decisive late run in the Britannia handicap.
Jockey Richard Hills held up Sheikh Hamdan’s colt towards the rear of the stands side group in the 1m heritage handicap, worth £90,000.
They went a scorching pace upfront and ultimately the frontrunners were unable to sustain it through the final furlong.
But all the while Hills had Fareer travelling with purpose and he began to scythe through the field from over 1f out.
The son of Bahamian Bounty sustained his challenge in stirring style towards the stands rail and passed the line in isolation with the other three fast-finishers spread towards the opposite rail.
But it was Fareer who had got to the front when it mattered most and secured a splendid 20-1 triumph by a head.
A delighted Dunlop said: “Richard gave him a great ride and it’s a fantastic result. The plan all year was to come for the Britannia and it has worked.”
“We said we’d hold him up as this is a horse that can quicken. The race panned out just about perfectly, although he found himself a little on his own and wandered around - but he picked up really well. We’re thrilled.”
