19.09.06 - Dunlop to start 2007 as public trainer
ED DUNLOP is set to become a public trainer from January 1, 2007.
The multiple-Classic winning handler will remain at Gainsborough Stables, which he will lease from the Maktoum family.
In 1994 Dunlop began his training career at the Newmarket-based yard where he was employed by Sheikh Maktoum.
Since then he has sent out hundreds of winners, including many triumphs at the highest level. Ta Rib landed Dunlop’s first Classic victory when winning the French 1,000 Guineas in 1996.
A succession of Group 1 victories have followed with stable stars such as Lailani, Fraulein, Court Masterpiece and Ouija Board.
The last-named, in particular, has significantly helped to lift the profile of Dunlop and Gainsborough Stables.
The five-year-old mare has so far registered six Group 1 wins with the victories arriving on three different continents. Now Dunlop is eager for many more top-class triumphs all over the world.
He said: “I am really looking forward to starting out as a public trainer and the challenges that such a role will bring.
“I must say how very grateful I am to the Maktoum family for their continuing support. Sheikh Maktoum gave me a major opportunity when asking me to train from Gainsborough Stables back in 1994 and now Sheikh Mohammed has offered me this chance to lease the yard.
“The next few months and the years ahead will be an exciting time for myself and the team here. Certainly, I am expecting the weeks and months until the end of 2006 to be really busy as we prepare for January 1.
“Not least on our agenda will be ensuring that we start off with plenty of horses and I will be present at all the major yearling sales between now and the end of the year.
“I am hoping to train for all my existing clients and would like to think that other owners might consider sending horses to us in the future.
“We feel that we have a lot to offer at Gainsborough Stables where the facilities are first class. We also have some of the best gallops in the world on our doorstep and I am fortunate enough to have a magnificent team in place to ensure that no stone is left unturned in maximising the potential of every horse based here.”
