Good morning from Newmarket. We head to the races at Chepstow this evening with two interesting looking runners, and hopefully we can have a productive time of things.

Our first representative is Dancingwithwolves in the seven-furlong 0-70 handicap at 6.00. The son of Footstepsinthesand has always been a headstrong character, but we saw gradual improvement in his behaviour in three novice runs on the way to an opening mark of 75. However, stepped up in trip to 10-furlongs on handicap debut at Leicester, and then back over a mile at Doncaster, he was far too free and gave himself little or no chance of seeing his races out.

So we need a change of plan, and today we revert to seven-furlongs and take off the hood which he has worn on all five career starts to date. He will be ridden once again by regular pilot Daniel Muscutt, and hopefully over this shorter trip Dan can let him stride on a bit and use his natural exuberance to his advantage. A fine big horse, with a great long stride, he has a little bit of natural ability and hopefully shouldn’t be too far away down to 0-70 level. We have yet to see the best of him, but hopefully this is a good opportunity.

In the mile and a half 0-65 for three-year-olds at 8.30, Perique has his first go in handicap company after three runs in AW maidens earlier in the year.  He was extremely wayward in his qualifying runs, but showed a glimmer of promise on his second start at Lingfield. The son of Cacique is a half-brother to Raa Atoll, who won a Gr.2 over two miles in Germany earlier this season, and hopefully there is plenty more to come from an opening mark of 60. However, it is worth remembering just how clueless he looked before and he is very much a work in progress. I am looking for a big step forward from his earlier efforts but he is a big, backward type and may still be a little green. It will be very interesting to see how he gets on.

Best wishes,
Ed.
