Baasha

Good morning from Newmarket. We have two runners this afternoon/evening, one each at Yarmouth and Kempton.

We kick off with Rainbow Spirit in the 2.30 at Yarmouth, a nicely-related daughter of Charm Spirit. She has shown a little ability in two maidens at seven-furlongs, but she is a half-sister to the useful stayer Imphal, so this step up to a mile seems logical. Her best sibling is the dual Listed winner Navajo Chief, who actually won a valuable Meydan handicap under then apprentice Harry Bentley – so it is a nice bit of symmetry to keep the same rider in the plate this afternoon. She is a big priced outsider, but I hope we will see some promise before she goes handicapping further down the line.

We have to wait until 9.10 for our next runner, namely Baasha in a mile and a half 0-65 handicap at Kempton. He had wind surgery earlier in the year, and returned to racecourse action with a staying on fifth at this venue just over three weeks ago. His rider Robert Havlin was complimentary afterwards, and they retain the partnership today. There are quite a few unexposed types in this race that could prove problematic, but we feel that we are competitively handicapped on a mark of 65, based on some of his placed efforts as a two-year-old last year. A wide draw complicates matters further, but hopefully he won’t be too far away from rewarding each way investors.

All the best,
Ed.
