Good morning from Newmarket! After a quiet few days we are back in action with two runners at Lingfield.

We get started with Cue’s Folly in the staying handicap at 12.40. This mare is easy to warm to, as she tries her heart out every time, but finding a winning opportunity is proving difficult. She ideally needs two and a quarter miles or further around a stiff track like Chepstow – but such opportunities are not too easy to come by at her level! The one time she did get those conditions, at the Welsh course in August, she ran a huge race to be a fast finishing third, and with a slice more luck would have been even closer. Her only subsequent run at Catterick in October saw her finish in mid-div, with everything around her happening too quickly.

So what of today? The last time she ran at Lingfield was in a mile and a quarter maiden on the turf track, which was never going to see her in a positive light, and today we are on the polytrack over two miles. She has run well on an artificial surface previously, finishing fourth and fifth in visits to Wolverhampton this summer, whilst it is only her fourth chance at two miles or further, so there could yet be a little improvement to come. The big concern is the track. She needs a long straight to allow her to fully get into her giant stride, and the undulations and downhill run leading to the home turn might also be a cause for concern. However, we are bound by a lack of suitable opportunities, and she needs a run. Hopefully she can run well and we know she will try her best. Joe Fanning rides.

In the 3.10 we unleash a two-year-old newcomer in the form of Global Freedom. By Maxios, he is out of a winning daughter of Giant’s Causeway, and hails from an excellent Niarchos family. He looks sure to come into his own over a mile or further in the future, as even his half-brother by Dark Angel has looked like a candidate to go further than a mile this year. This is a very competitive race that we have bumped into – though it is hard to find otherwise at the moment – but I hope he will learn plenty for the experience. Lingfield is not the easiest track for a newcomer, but they tend to come on plenty for a run there. I look forward to seeing some encouragement on debut. Shane Kelly takes the mount.

All the best,
Ed.
