Mudallel

Good Afternooon from Newmarket! Another day with just one runner - this time it is the turn of Mudallel in the 2.30 at Chelmsford.

He was a winner over course and distance last time in a 0-85 handicap, getting up in the very last stride. As a result, he has only been nudged up by a pound to 81, and today’s race is within the same ratings band- however, it looks an altogether more difficult task.

The unexposed Qaroun, the well-handicapped Makaarim, the re-opposing Shadow Hunter and the in-form Majboor are just some of the potential dangers in this nine runner field. Mudallel will need to up his game to win again, and might find a little traffic trouble from his inside draw as an out and out hold up performer.

Last year when Mudallel was nudged up to marks in the mid-80s it appeared beyond him, so he needs to improve even for a small rise in the weights, but I would like to think it is not out of the question. We know this is a tough assignment but are hoping for a career best. James Doyle, who won on the horse twice last season, is booked to ride.

All the best,
Ed.
