Sweet smell of success for Lemon Drop Red

Tue 28 June 2011

LEMON DROP RED topped up the celebrations of Hong Kong owner Ronald Arculli when opening his account in the mile and a half handicap at Brighton on Tuesday.

Mr Arculli enjoyed a big winner when Red Cadeaux sluiced home by nine lengths in the G3 Curragh Cup in Ireland last week-end and though Lemon Drop Red has been disappointing, the penny suddenly dropped on the seaside course with William Buick getting a good tune out of the three-year-old, who won with some authority.

RED CADEAUX, who produced a career-best performance in Ireland, has been raised 4lb to a mark of 110, which increases his prospects of making the cut for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

Ed said: "The 'Cup' could be just the right type of race for Red Cadeaux and I think we'd all have a lot of fun out there. The more I watch the video of Saturday's race, the more I am impressed. He is a middle-distance horse with a turn of foot and that is what you need for Melbourne but we could have a crack at the Irish St Leger en route, though his programme will be determined by the ground."

NATIVE KHAN, so disappointing in the Irish Derby on Sunday, is enjoying a break and will return in the second half of the season. Ed said: "It was not a case of Native Khan not staying - he would not have won at any trip and he just ran flat. We will freshen him up and probably bring him back over a mile and a quarter."

Ed, who will gallop dual Oaks heroine SNOW FAIRY on Wednesday morning before deciding whether to take on So You Think and Workforce in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday, sends SHARNBERRY to Ireland tomorrow for the G3 Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse.

"Sharnberry saw too much daylight when finishing fifth in the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp and while she did stay the mile, the drop back to seven furlongs will probably suit her as she has bags of speed. Depending how things go, we might then have a look at the Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood," said Ed.
