Sparte Proves Too Strong At Doncaster

Sat 08 July 2017

Sparte Quercus

Sparte Quercus arrived with us from Hong Kong earlier this year and the son of Canford Cliffs has slowly acclimatised to his new surroundings. He showed ability in three Maiden runs and his recent fifth at Windsor suggested he would appreciate a step up in trip from ten furlongs. Graham Lee rode him for the second time in the second division of the 1m4f handicap at Doncaster and we were hopeful he would improve for his first try at twelve furlongs.

He jumped out of the stalls well and he was soon tracking the leaders as they went an even pace in the early stages. As is his want he travelled sweetly throughout the race and he started to make ground as they galloped past the three furlong marker. As they hit the two pole he started to challenge the joint favourite Boychick who was determined not to be passed. Graham Lee kept at Sparte Quercus and he gradually wore down Boychick and won a shade cosily by three quarters of a length at the line.

This was an encouraging performance from our gelding and there should be more improvement to come from him. The handicapper cannot be too punitive with him as the second has now filled the runner up spot on his last three runs and having had seventeen runs he is quite exposed. Graham Lee felt the ground was fast enough for him and that we should look at keeping him to good ground or slower in the future.

Congratulations to Mr Hui the owner of Sparte Quercus who is Hong Kong based. This is our first winner for Mr Hui and we hope it will be the first of many. This was our fourth winner in the month of July and whilst the week ahead looks like being quiet we hope the winners can keep on flowing.
