Global Humor

Good morning from Newmarket. We field two runners today, and both have the ability to win races, but neither is proving easy to place!

Our first representative is Baasha in the 3.40 at Lingfield. A horse that needed wind surgery earlier in the season, he has become a strong traveller that is just struggling to see out his races at the finish, and we have been debating his trip at length. On his penultimate start at Kempton he travelled like the winner and then blatantly failed to get home over a mile and a half, before running a solid race to finish third back over a mile and a quarter at Chelmsford – again travelling well.

So we are reasonably happy that we have settled on the right trip, and it might be that Lingfield and its short straight will play to the strengths of a horse like him that does his best work on the bridle. We are well drawn in stall four, and have secured the services of Shane Kelly. I don’t consider Baasha to be badly handicapped from a mark of 63, but finding less competitive races this winter is proving tough! There are numerous dangers in this field, and one or two that might yet improve past us, but I hope we can go very close to rewarding each way support.

Even more of a conundrum is our second runner of the day, Global Humor. He runs in the seven-furlong 0-70 handicap at Wolverhampton at 8.45, and truthfully I wouldn’t have believed that he would end up in that category earlier in the year when he was rated 82 and looked fairly promising. However, subsequent results have been extremely disappointing, including when he was last at Kempton on his most recent run.

Despite that, he still works like a horse better than his mark of 67, and we are having one last throw of the dice. We return for the first time to the scene of his only career victory, and add a pair of blinkers for the first time, to see if that might spark him back to life. It is impossible to forecast how he will perform, but we just have to keep our fingers crossed that he puts his best foot forward. Rab Havlin is in the plate.

All the best,
Ed.
