Michael's Climbs Back To The Summit

Mon 24 July 2017

Michael’s Mount signed off 2016 in style when he won a Catterick handicap convincingly and we had hoped he would go on from that this season. Frustratingly the ground has often dried out too much for him this year and whilst he had run a couple of respectable races he had not replicated that Catterick run. Fortunately the rain came at Lingfield Park ahead of Saturday's meeting and with the ground described as soft there, we were hopeful he would be able to make light of the drop back to ten furlongs on ground that he loves.

Luke Morris soon had the son of Mount Nelson tracking the leaders on the outside and he was a fraction keen in the reapplied blinkers. Thankfully he soon settled behind the leaders as they set an even gallop throughout the contest. As they entered the straight Michael’s Mount was travelling noticeably well and Morris kicked on under a hands and heels drive to put the race to bed. Our gelding started to idle slightly in the closing stages but Morris kept him up to his work and he held on by three quarters of a length from the fast finishing Singapore Sling.

It was fantastic to win for the first time in 2017 with Michael’s Mount and this was his third career victory. We would love to find some soft ground again when he is ready to run as it seems to be the key to him. The handicapper cannot be too hard on him as it was not a deep race given there were only five runners and the third may not have handled the ground. We hope he can be competitive off of his new mark in the future and he should be a fun horse to have for the second part of the 2017 campaign.

Congratulations to Michael’s Mount’s owners the Miltil Consortium. The Partnership have had horses here at La Grange for a long time and have been very supportive. We hope Michael’s can go on from this and win for you again. It has been fantastic to keep the momentum going recently and this was our twenty seventh winner of the 2017 campaign.
