Friday My 22

Fri 22 May 2015

Molly keeping a watchful eye over two-year-olds in our trotting ring this morning.

I must apologise to those of you who have been waiting in anticipation for my words of wisdom prior to Kittens Red’s race- but too late he has already won!

An overcast but mild morning in Newmarket today.

We had two groups of workers this morning, the first ventured to the Limekilns and worked on the round gallop and then I took a group of my two year olds to work on the Al Bahathri.

Derek Whipp, who owns a share in our two-year-old filly Fun Money stopped off this morning to watch third lot. He was joined by his father, who celebrates his 93rd birthday today so many happy returns to him! Derek’s son, Matt also came to see the filly so we were lucky enough to meet three generations of the family at once!

A mixed day at Goodwood yesterday with God Willing acquitting himself well in the 7f handicap. He travelled quite sweetly but had no more to offer late on – slower ground and a return to one mile will probably suit, while it’s likely that the handicapper has a grip on him.

Dark Red was once again unruly in the stalls and he looked like he would be beaten out of sight at half way. However, he stuck on well in the straight to snatch third and the form is likely to prove strong. He still needs to mature mentally.

Arethusa didn’t stay in the Height Of Fashion and she wasn’t good enough anyway. The winner was imperious and we will probably think about a return to handicap company now.

Lastly, Seaworthy travelled quite well in the fillies’ maiden but was, once again, well beaten at the line. She can now go handicapping.

Just the one runner this afternoon as we are rerouting Prince Gagarin to the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday. The ground was beautiful at Goodwood yesterday, but with the forecast dry it will continue to quicken and the prospect of slower ground in Ireland has swayed our hand. Adam Kirby will ride him over there with Ryan committed to Ballydoyle. We kept him in the Derby this morning.

Finally, my girls are home for half term so there’s no chance of any peace and quiet for Mrs D and I this bank holiday weekend!

Back tomorrow, Ed.
