Amazing Red enjoys a well earned drink

Amazing Red has a lot to live up to given his half-brother Red Cadeaux’s global exploits but he had shown significant promise when winning a Pontefract Maiden as a three year old last season. He returned from a break yesterday at Newmarket with a point to prove however after failing to build on his seasonal debut at Wolverhampton when he was third in two subsequent runs. His tendency to be free hindered him last time at the July Course over one mile six furlongs and it was hoped that a recent gelding operation would help the son of Teofilo relax.

Our gelding was dropped in during the early stages of the race two wide off the rail and he settled well under P J McDonald. The pace was modest but he slowly edged forward to ensure he was not out of position when the leaders quickened for home. As the field entered the final furlong there was a three way battle for the lead and Amazing Red battled it out with Stamford Raffles and C’Est No Mour as the winning post started to loom. Showing a likeable attitude Amazing Red stuck his head down and he began to move away from his two rivals to win by three quarters of a length at the line.

It was fantastic to get this likeable gelding back on track and given he had to challenge widest of all on the unfavourable part of the track, this performance can be upgraded. The second and third look to be progressive and whilst it was a drop in grade for Amazing Red, this was still a competitive affair. The ground may not have been ideal for him and he is likely to appreciate better ground although he would not want it too fast. The handicapper cannot be too hard on him and we hope he will remain competitive off of his new mark. He could stay at twelve furlongs for now but the way he settled and finished his race suggests a step up in trip again in the future cannot be discounted.

Congratulations to Amazing Red’s owner Mr Arculli. After a disappointing start to the week when Dark Red was demoted to second at Glorious Goodwood it is fantastic to end it on a high. Well done to everyone at La Grange, this win was the 30th of the season and the steady flow of winners continues to be maintained. Let’s keep up the hard work and keep pushing for many more.
