Toro Dorado

Bay Gelding
DOB: 24 Feb 2016
Toronado x Rawoof (Nayef)
Owner: R Foden, M Mitchell & Plows

Toronado is a first season sire whose progeny have proved very popular so far at the sales with an average sale price during Tattersalls Book 1 of 115,000 Guineas. He is a dual Group 1 winning miler winning The Sussex Stakes (Grp 1) as a three-year-old and The Queen Anne Stakes (Grp 1) as a four-year-old. He also won The Champagne Stakes (Grp 2) as a two-year-old.

This colt’s mother Rawoof was trained by Ed for Sheikh Hamdan and is a winner coming from a very good family with both Tactic and Ribchester featuring in her pedigree.

Toro Dorado began his career in six-furlong novices, but looked a likely sort to improve once handicapping over further. An initial mark of 65 proved a little high, but on his second nursery outing at Kempton, over a mile, he produced a career best to finish second to paternal half-brother Torolight.

He was favourite to follow up shortly after over the same course and distance, but he could only find one pace in the closing stages and finished fifth. He was roughed off for the year after that, and it is hoped he will strengthen up over the winter and make his mark in handicap company next year.

On his seasonal bow as a three-year-old, Toro Dorado showed the benefit of a step up to a mile and a quarter with an ecnouraging fourth at Chelmsford. There is just the slight suspicion that he is leaving a little for himself, so headgear is likely to be enlisted for the rest of the season (as it was at the latter end of his two-year-old campaign). A more galloping track ought to suit, and we hope that he will prove up to defying his mark in the mid-60s.
