Sporting Times

Chestnut Gelding
DOB: 14 Mar 2014
Sir Percy x Queen Of Iceni (Erhaab)
Owner: Mrs I H Stewart-Brown & M J Meacock

This gelding is a son of the Derby winner Sir Percy, who has gone on to become a Gr.1 producing sire. The dam Queen Of Iceni was a versatile performer who won a Goodwood maiden at three. She has produced the three-time winner Knightly Escapade, and is a half-sister to Gr.1 Prix du Cadran winner Give Notice (trained by Mr Dunlop senior) and Times Up, who won the Gr.2 Doncaster Cup for the boss and also for his father.

The chestnut made his debut in a 7f Maiden at Leicester at two and produced a huge run to finish second at odds of 66/1.

Sporting Times then broke his maiden at Lingfield as a three-year-old and went on to compete very well from marks in the low 80s for the rest of the season. He ran adequately on his 2018 comeback at Newmarket and then finished a fast finishing second at Kempton over a mile and three furlongs. He failed by just a head to get up on that occasion, though it was a run that promised much for the future.

On his next start at Newmarket he was a creditable third, though his jockey James Doyle reported that he simply would not let himself down on the fast ground. Perhaps that run was a contributer to issues which plagued him for the rest of the year, and resulted in him not seeing a racecourse again during the 2018 season.

Now five years of age, Sporting Times is from a family that improves with time and distance, so he looks sure to continue to go forward. He only returned to full training in May, but we will be doing our best to get him back into action during the summer. He remains a handicapper to look forward to.
