Selkirk (USA) x Yukon Hope (USA) (Forty Niner)
Owner: Cliveden Stud

By the excellent broodmare sire Selkirk, Independence is out of the dual runner-up Yukon Hope. She is from the family of the top-class Reference Point, who won both the Derby and the St Leger.

Following a low-key juvenile campaign, Independence enjoyed a prolific three-year-old summer, winning first in Listed company before landing the Group 3 Matron Stakes and the Group 2 Chariot Stakes in which she beat 1000 Guineas winner Ameerat.

She was due to commence her four-year old career in 2002 but sadly she met with a setback, so it was decided that she would be retired to stud.
