Dagueneau

Bay Gelding
DOB: 08 Mar 2015
Champs Elysees x Bright Enough (Fantastic Light)
Owner: Mr Andrew Gemmell

Now gelded, Dageuneau was always expected to come into his own with time and distance, as he is by Champs Elysees, the same sire as our Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris. The sire won the Gr.1 Hollywood Turf Cup and the Gr.1 Canadian International during his racing career, whilst his profile as a stallion has recently been boosted by his daughter Billesdon Brook winning the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Dageuneau is out of the Fantastic Light mare Bright Enough, who was a winner over a mile at two and is a half-sister to the Listed winners Oasis Dancer (also notable for winning a £541,000 first prize in the Tattersalls Timeform Million) and  Smart Enough. She has already produced the 90-rated Pack Leader and it is not yet beyond the realms of possiblity that Dageuneau will achieve something similar.

After three modest runs at two, he started life handicapping as a three-year-old from a mark of 61 and moved up to 67 after a couple of second place finishes, before winning nicely at Nottingham. That victory came on his first try at a mile and three-quarters and hinted at more to come the further he went, though he was nudged up another four pounds. He followed that up with a good second in a competitive contest at Sandown, and then impressed when winning very easily at Beverley in August over two miles.

He was inevtiably knocked by the handicapper as a result, but would go on to finish second in a competitive Chelmsford handicap before the season was out.

Dagueneau made rapid strides last season, and concluded 2018 rated 80. He looks just the sort of horse who will improve again from three to four, and promises plenty as a young stayer to follow. His staying on sixth over an inadequate mile and a half at Leicester on his comeback was the perfect pipe-opener. There remains much to look forward to.
